Cornwall » St Just accommodation

The most westerly town in Cornwall, St Just is located between moorland and the north coast, just above Cape Cornwall. Its rows of sturdy granite cottages remind us that it was formerly the centre of a thriving mining industry in the area, also evidenced in the disused engine houses which pepper the surrounding hills. The traditional square, complete with 14th century inn and church, remains the centre of a healthy local community, and latterly a burgeoning artistic community. Also in the town centre is the ancient Plain-an-Gwarry, a dedicated space for miracle plays in medieval times and now the hub of the summer Lafrowda Festival.

Flanking St Just are Cot and Kenidjack Valleys. The former is the verdant location of the youth hostel, and the latter is one of Penwith's many mystical sites. The impressive Cape Cornwall marks the splitting of the Atlantic currents and is accompanied by the Brisons, a pair if islets which have been likened to a sleeping General De Gaulle, and which has sealed the fate of many a ship over the years.

Its location also makes St Just an ideal stop off point when walking the coastpath between Land's End and St Ives.
