Cornwall » Lizard accommodation
The Lizard Peninsula boasts the most southerly point in Great Britain, its surrounding sea guarded by a lighthouse since 1751. It is a headland rich in pretty coves, fishing villages rife with tales of smuggling and out-of-the-way beaches. Of particular note are the villages of Cadgwith, Coverack and Mullion and the beach at Kynance Cove with its series of caves.
Lizard is also famed for its native serpentine rock which has been fashioned into all manner of ornaments over the years, with some local craftsmen still continuing to do so. Scuba divers enjoy this stretch of the Cornish coast with its wrecks and reefs, and numerous diving schools can be found here. Furthermore, birdwatchers will be keen to note that this is a breeding ground for the rare but recovering Cornish chough. Look out for its red beak and legs.
Other highlights of the Lizard Peninsula include Goonhilly Earth Station, its mega dishes tracking satellites from its Nature Reserve location, and Poldhu Cove, from where Marconi sent the first ever transatlantic message.
Helston is the nearest large town and, to the east, lies the picturesque Helford estuary.
